Professor of science, who has an important place in the field with his achievements ,Prof.Dr. Kemal Karpat lost his life. As Marmara University's family, we give our condolences to his family, our nation and the world of science.
Professor Dr. Kemal H. Karpat
Kemal H. Karpat was born in the Babadag village of Dobruca, within the borders of Romania. After graduating from Istanbul University Faculty of Law, he received his master's and doctoral degrees in political and social sciences at the Universities of Washington and New York.
He started his academic career at the Universities of New York and Washington in 1950 and then worked at the United Nations Economic and Social Council, Montana State University, New York University, Princeton University, Robert College, Bilkent University. He worked as a faculty member and manager at the Faculty of Political Sciences, Harvard University, John Hopkins University, Colombia University and Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Science Sociales.
Between 1970 and 1988, he was Head of the Middle East Studies Department at the University of Wisconsin, and chaired the Turkish Research Association and the Turkish Research Agency. He was the founding chairman of the Central Asian Studies Association and served as the head of the Central Asian Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin.
His most prestigious work, named Ottoman Population,was published by the University of Wisconsin. Kemal Karpat, who retired from the History Department of the University of Wisconsin, received honorary doctorates from the Ovidius University of Romania and Chuvash National University of Russia.
Karpat, who was also an honorary member of the Turkish Historical Society, had the Romanian Independence medal, the University of Bucharest Dimitri Cantemir medal, and the Turkish Academy of Sciences Award for his scientific work.
The world-renowned historian Karpat, who has published more than 100 articles and 20 books in 20 countries, is also the recipient of 2009 Grand National Assembly Honor Award and Outstanding Service Award.
