It was stated that first time in Turkey pharmacogenetics applications will be done institutionally to use in treatments aimed at specific to personal genetic structure in promotion meeting of Marmara University Pharmacogenetics Unit held on February 27, 2017 in Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health Marmara University Pendik Training and Search Hospital. The director of the strategic project which is carried with the support of Istanbul Development Agency and the director of Marmara University Pharmacogenetics Unit, Prof. Belgin Süsleyici started her pharmacogenetics studies during her postdoc and exclusive molecular studies and preventive medicine in Center for Preventive Medicine in 2000 in Henri Poincaré University Nancy, France. Working in European Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium Agency of Turkey and as president of Farmacogenetics and Individualised Treatment Association, Prof. Süsleyici said that the world has come a long way passing from the disease-centered treatment to patient-centered treatment and the personal reports will be presented to clinicians which were prepared in Pharmacogenetics Unit established in Marmara University Faculty of Arts and Sciences in order to examine a person’s drug metabolism doing genetic analysis. Prof. Süsleyici said in her speech, ‘’Thus it will ensure that the right medication and the right dose is applied to the right patient, because genetic information of a person’s drug metabolism is defined by pharmacogenetic test and microarray technology, thus the correct use of drugs will be ensured and the side effects are prevented, in this way it will contribute to health economics.
Prof. Belgin Süsleyici expressed that pharmacogenetic pilot scheme will be carried out free of charge on total of one thousand patients of cardiology, psychiatry, neurology, oncology, anesthesiology and reanimation, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, thoracic surgery clinics in Turkey Ministry of Health Marmara University Pendik Training and Search Hospital and Group Florence Nightingale Hospitals, and right after the results are evaluated it will be possible to serve all health care organisations in the country.
Head of European Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (Eu-PIC) and academician of European Pharmacogenetics Excellence Center Erasmus University Prof. Ron Van Schaik said that Prof. Belgin Süsleyici and he have worked together for a long time and told of routine pharmacogenetics systems in european countries expressing his pleasure at the initiation of pharmacogenetics implementations that can be used in health system of Turkey through the data that will be acquired soon.
Head of Ministry of Health General Directorate of EU and Foreign Affairs Congress Coordination Dr. Kemal Aydın stating that they will hold 3rd World Healthful Ageing Congress in 2018 in Turkey said that in this regard we will have presented it in 2018 in World Healthful Ageing Congress making the initiative of pharmacogenetics public. Hereupon this project will be shared with other countries through an important congress in 2018. I believe that the services of Marmara University Pharmacogenetics Unit are of vital importance for public health and development, and I thank to the founder of the unit Prof. Belgin Süsleyici for her efforts and collaboration.
In the meeting ‘’Islamic World Correct Use of Drugs Network Project’’ collaboration protocol was signed between Turkey-Holland Health Foundation and World Ageing Council. Appropriate to sustainability of the Project and UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 programmes, ‘’ Workshop of Correct Use of Drugs Among the Elderly’’ being organised in Elderly Week 18-24 March, Strategic Plan of Drugs’ Use Specific to Genetic Structure of the Elderly was agreed on after establishing National Geriatric-pharmacogenetics Working Party.
