1st International Istanbul Conservation and Restoration Conference on the subject of “Ethnographic and Archaeological Textiles”, organized in cooperation with Marmara University Faculty of Technology, Istanbul Beylerbeyi Sabancı Maturation Institute, Pavlodar State Pedagogical University and TBC (Technical Business Consulting), was held in Professor Nihad Sayar Conference Hall, Sultanahmet Campus, on 20th January.
Dean of the Faculty of Technology Prof. Dr. Hasan Erdal, making the opening speech of the conference, said: “An R&D Laboratory was established within the Faculty of Technology with the support of the Istanbul Development Agency (İSTKA). I thank both them and everyone who supported us and contributed to us from the beginning of this project to the end. Many Restoration-Conservation laboratories are working within the Ministry of Culture. I believe that good studies will be done academically in this laboratory established within our faculty. In addition to evaluating the details of all textile materials that come to our R&D laboratory after removing from the excavations, it has been carried out their restoration, test analysis and conservation operations. In addition, we are working on many areas such as raw material determination of material, yarn structure, yarn strength, color analysis. ”
Moderated by Professor Ragsana Hasanova, the conference hosted a few academicians with their speeches: Prof.Dr. Hülya Tezcan of Nişantaşı University Fashion and Textile Department, with “Storage and Conservation of Ethnographic Textile Works in Museums”; Prof. Dr. Gülgün Köroğlu of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and also the Head of Excavation of Sinop Balatlar Church, with “Late Ottoman Period Textile Findings from Balatlar Church Excavation”; Lecturer Dr. Meral Özay of Marmara University Faculty of Technology, with “Analysis and Method Development Stages in Ethnographic and Archaeological Textiles”; Tatyana Krupa, Director of the International Research Laboratory "YMAI" affiliated to the Kazakhstan Pavlador State Pedagogical University Archaeological Scientific Research Laboratory, with "Conservation of Ethnographic and Archaeological Textiles and Scientific Research Methods".
