“Women's Employment in the Sectors of the Future and Work-Life Balance Summit” organized within the scope of 8th March International Women's Day with the cooperation of the Women-Men Equal Opportunities Commission (KEFEK) of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and Marmara University Women's Studies in Economic and Social Fields (ESKAR) was held in İbrahim Üzümcü Conference Hall. Names from the world of politics and business world took part as speakers at the summit.
The opening speech of the summit was made by ESKAR Director Prof. Dr. Fatma Ayanoğlu. Stating that this panel laid the groundwork for the work and life balance report in women's employment, Ayanoğlu said, "We are guiding our research and studies with the mission of strong women, strong families and strong society to increase female employment."
Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kurt said in his speech that “Today, our universities are institutions where gender equality is perhaps the most comfortable for employees and students, and vital issues such as equal pay for equal work are resolved. According to academic studies, sustainable development progresses in direct proportion to women's participation in business life. As a result, employment of women means that they receive a larger share of the level of welfare achieved and benefit equally from the outcomes of this development.”
Stating that strengthening the economic position of women and ending violence against women are their priority work, KEFEK President and Balıkesir Deputy Atty. Belgin Uygur said, “The shortest way to empower our women is to include them in every aspect of life, especially in the economy and production process, while women's employment and entrepreneurship should be made sustainable.”
Şenpiliç Chairman of the Board of Directors İpek Üstündağ, who spoke at the first panel where the representatives of the sector took part, talked about the changes brought about by the digital transformation in the sectors and said, “Work and family life should be harmonized together with the increase in women's employment”. Mustafa Gültepe, President of Istanbul Ready-to-Wear and Apparel Exporters' Association (İHKIP), made a presentation on women's employment in the Ready-to-Wear and Apparel industry. Emphasizing that 52 percent of its employees are women, Gültepe said that women are dominant in the ready-made clothing industry, but middle and senior-level female managers should be increased. Gültepe continued her speech by talking about their contributions to high school and university level education and projects to increase women's employment.
Adnan Dalgakıran, President of the Federation of Machinery Manufacturing Industry Associations (MAKFED), said that the production will be made by robots in the near future and mentioned that both women and men should receive qualified training in the light of technological developments. In terms of initiative, Dalgakıran talked about the deficiencies in the political and social fields and said “Mechanisms that will protect rights and freedoms in the field of individuals should be built”.
Deniz Karakaş, Deputy Secretary-General of the Confederation of Turkish Employers' Unions (TİSK), took place as the last speaker of the first panel. Karakaş shared data on women's employment at the international level and said that companies with a high representation of women are ahead in terms of innovation.
In the second panel of the summit, representatives of Women's Non-Governmental Organizations took part as speakers. Ekoteks Chairman of the Board and İHKİB TİM Delegate Nilgün Özdemir, Women Entrepreneurs Association (KAGİDER) Board Member Esra Bezircioğlu, Women and Democracy Association (KADEM) Board Member Atty. Canan Sarı and Board member of the Women on Board Association Turkey Özge Bulut Maraşlı took place as speakers. the Material and social inequalities in women's employment were discussed in the panel where Canan Sarı and Member of the Board of the Women's Association (YKDD) Özge Bulut Maraşlı took part as speakers. In this part of the panel, financial and social inequalities in women's employment were discussed.
Summit ended with the presentation of plaques by Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kurt and Prof. Dr. Fatma Ayanoğlu to the speakers.
